Why do raccoons have black markings around their eyes?

--

Although the black fur around their eyes makes them look like little thieves, it is believed there is actually a purpose behind those cute little markings.

The black fur actually aids in their sight by absorbing light that is coming into their eyes, as well as reducing glare.

Similar to how football players and other athletes wear black under their eyes during games.

Since raccoons are very active at night, this also helps to enhance their night vision by minimizing peripheral light in order to help them to see objects better in the dark.
